Whether they don’t want to be burdens to their children or are placing faith in future innovation, older adults view assisted living as a better option than moving in with family members. Going to a nursing home, meanwhile, is about as popular as a root canal.
That is one of the takeaways from a recent survey conducted by Retirement Living Information Center. The online retirement resource website surveyed over 2,300 seniors, ranging in age from 50 to 81+, and the results showed today’s seniors are willing to age in place as long as possible, by any means at their disposal.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the survey was the 30% of respondents who preferred moving into assisted living over moving in with a family member, if they were no longer able to live on their own; 16% of respondents said they would move in with a family member. The majority of respondents said they would stay in their homes, but with a full- or part-time caregiver.
An overwhelming 83% of respondents indicated they planned on living at home as they aged, and 75% were willing to remodel their bathrooms in some form to account for aging, like adding grab bars or non-slip mats, or installing walk-in bathtubs. The respondents are becoming more tech-savvy and indicated they would use technology in some form to age in place, with online pharmacies, medical alert systems, ride-sharing apps and grocery delivery services proving very popular.

Respondents also placed a priority on their surrounding communities in the survey. Forty percent said being near areas they frequent, like doctors offices, grocery stores, libraries and friends, is very important when it comes to staying in their current homes
